If a student is going to be UNAVOIDABLY absent for more than three (3) consecutive school days for any reason, the parent(s) can request a Short-Term Independent Study Contract (STISC) to insure that the student will not miss any work or be penalized for the absence. Requests for STISCs must be made at least ten school days prior to the starting date (first day of absence).
Academic Requirements:
> Student must have satisfactory grades, as determined by the school principal.
Attendance Requirements:
> Student must have no more than 3 days of unexcused absence (including 30 minutes or more tardy) since the first school day of this school year. For more details regarding unexcused absences, please see the parent/student handbook.
Additional Restrictions and Requirements:
> STISCs will not be issued during any type of State Testing. Please check with the school’s main office for dates as this time-frame will vary from year to year.
> There can only be two (2) contracts issued per school year with a maximum of 15 school days total. If a student fails to complete any part of the school work given or hands in unsatisfactory work for any assignments on the initial STISC, no further STISCs will be granted for the remainder of the current school year.
> All work assigned is due to the main office before the start of the school, on the day the student returns to school.
> If the student does not meet the above eligibility requirements for STISC and you choose to still have your child be absent for that period of time, the absences will be considered unexcused, and count towards truancy.
> If there are delays to your student’s return, or if you decide to add days to your trip during the STISC time-frame, those days will be unexcused absences and count towards truancy. You cannot add additional days to the original agreed upon time-frame while on Short-Term Independent Study.
